How to find hope when life is hard

Feel like giving up? Discover how faith in God can help you overcome life’s struggles, believe the truth about who you are, and find lasting hope when life is hard.

Have you ever asked yourself any of the following questions?

  • How do I overcome my struggles?
  • Is it possible to live in victory?
  • Why is life still hard even though I believe in God?
  • How can I be victorious as a Christian?

If so, you’re not alone. Countless others have wrestled with these same thoughts. The truth is, becoming a Christian doesn’t mean life is suddenly easy, but it does mean we now face life’s difficulties differently. That difference is rooted in the hope we have in Jesus. Here are three key truths to help you find hope when life is hard.

There is hope when life is hard… if we are prepared to open our hearts to the truth

1. You’re never alone in your struggle

The first truth is that when we become a believer we do not face hardship alone. God is with us in every moment of our lives. He knows our pain, our doubts and our fears and He cares deeply.

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)

When things feel overwhelming, we can run to Him. He is our refuge, our strength and our ever-present help in times of trouble (see Psalm 46:1). There is real hope when life is hard because we don’t face it on our own.

2. We respond by faith, not fear

To live in victory doesn’t mean we never struggle – it means we trust God in the struggle. Faith is choosing to believe that God will come through, even when we can’t yet see how. “For we live by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)

We walk forward, believing God’s promises over our feelings. We believe He is who He says He is, and He will do what He has said He will do. This is how we hold onto hope when life is hard, by fixing our eyes not on the problem but on the One who holds the solution.

3. You have a new manual for life

God hasn’t left us to figure things out on our own. He’s given us His Word, the Bible, as a guide for every situation we face. In it, we discover who we truly are, and how deeply loved we are. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

So much of the battle is fought in the mind. What do you believe about yourself? Do you see yourself through the lens of your past failures or through the truth of God’s Word?

Lies vs truth: renewing your mind

The Bible tells us we have an enemy: “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

Jesus also called him the ‘father of lies’ (John 8:44). One of his greatest tactics is to feed us falsehoods—“you’re not good enough”, “you’ll never change”, “you’re too far gone”. But God’s truth is different.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
(2 Corinthians 5:17) You are not who you used to be. You are loved. You are redeemed. And you can overcome. Start believing the truth about yourself and discover hope when life is hard!

Practical ways to stay hopeful

  • Write down God’s promises and keep them where you can see them.
  • Speak truth over yourself in the mirror each morning.
  • Replace lies with Scripture – take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5).
  • Listen to songs that speak life, For example – You Say by Lauren Daigle:

“You say I am loved when I can’t feel a thing / You say I am strong when I think I am weak… And I believe.”

Lauren Daigle

This simple song reminds us that we are not defined by our doubts or mistakes, but by what God says about us.

God gives hope when life is hard and brings transformation

Change doesn’t always happen overnight, but when you walk with Jesus, change will come. His love is transformational. He makes all things new (Revelation 21:5). As you surrender more of your heart to Him, you’ll find that you can live differently. You can find hope when life is hard, because the One who overcame the world lives in you.

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

You can be an overcomer

Wherever you are in your journey of faith – just starting out, returning after a time away, or feeling weary from the road – know this: You are not alone. You are not forgotten. And there is always hope when life is hard. Start today by choosing to believe God’s truth over the lies. Hold on to His promises. And remind yourself often by saying: “I am an overcomer through Christ.”

Respond to the hope found in Jesus

If you’re reading this and you’ve never made a personal decision to follow Jesus, or if you feel far from God and want to come back to Him, know this: He’s waiting with open arms. He loves you, and He has a good plan for your life. The hope we’ve been talking about – real, lasting hope – is found in a relationship with Him. Today can be your turning point. All it takes is a simple prayer of surrender, spoken in faith. If you’re ready, pray this:

“Lord Jesus, I come to You today just as I am. I know that I’ve made mistakes and I need Your forgiveness. Thank You for loving me and dying on the Cross for me. I believe You rose again and are alive today. Please come into my heart, be my Lord and Saviou and help me live for You. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer, heaven is rejoicing! Please let someone know, get connected with a local church or Christian community, and begin reading the Bible to grow in your faith. You’ve just made the most important decision of your life. There is always hope when life is hard, because Jesus is with you now and forever.
