“In him we live and move and have our being!” shouted the apostle above the din of dispute at the Areopagus in Athens. The Athenians were renowned for loving a good philosophical debate. Paul had been wandering around the city while waiting for his friends to arrive from Berea. As he walked, he noticed that people were very religious in Athens. He even came across an altar dedicated to the unknown god. The Areopagus was a place where men would gather to discuss the latest philosophical fads. “This is the God Almighty who created the whole universe,” said Paul. “From one man he made every nation of men that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.”
Jeremiah 1:12
The LORD said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”
I believe Paul was pointing out that there is only one true God. He is the supreme Creator, autonomous, self-determining and possesses an exclusive purpose. This reminds me of an analogy I once heard of how, up in the seas around the frozen peninsulas of Greenland, great swathes of ice can be seen floating in the water. Here you could find huge icebergs as well as smaller blocks bobbing in the icy sea. On closer examination, you would notice how the ice seemed to flow in different directions; for some reason, the larger bergs flow one way while smaller blocks, another. The reason for this is, the smaller blocks, because they’re shallow, are tossed about by the great winds on the surface of the Arctic sea while the larger icebergs, because they proceed deeper down into the waters, are drawn along by the ocean currents beneath the surface.
Our lives are subject to similar forces. On the surface, we’re affected by the whimsical winds of every flimsy fancy. The superficial influences of the world about us often nudge us and push us to compromise our standards or to follow their often hidden agendas. It’s here, as we feel the breeze of opinions or the winds of change in the circumstances of life, that we begin to doubt God’s plans and his purposes. But if the Lord has spoken his word to you, then nothing can ever change his purposes for your life. The Bible tells us that as the rain falls to the earth and produces a crop for food before returning to the clouds, just so, when God speaks, his word will not return to him without producing the purposes that he intended for it to produce. God is sovereign. His purposes are exclusive.
In the Lord your God you live and move and have your being! His word is the sovereign current running deep beneath the surface of your life. If he has given you a word today then he will fulfil his plans for you tomorrow. Don’t allow yourself to be swayed by the flimsy fluctuations of winds of change above the surface.
Our God is high and exalted. He is our Sovereign Majesty, his will is paramount, his character is supreme and his power, unlimited.
God-tracking is living and moving and having your being in his exclusive purpose.
