Snakes on Your Path

And when those snakes and scorpions try to attack your feet, trample on them with all authority! Remember, the One in you is a thousand times greater than the one in the world.

In Bible times, people did not have the luxury of motorised transport or railway systems to travel from one town to another. The only modes of transport they had at their disposal were camels, horses, donkeys and their feet. The Judean terrain was very unforgiving. Roads were little more than rocky, dusty pathways infested with scorpions and snakes. The average traveller travelled by foot, feet clad with nothing more than open sandals. I’m sure there must have been many a time when travellers were stung by scorpions, bitten by snakes or worse.

Luke 10:19
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

When the 72 disciples returned after Jesus had commissioned them for a short missionary trip (which they undertook by foot) they were so excited to tell of how even demons obeyed the authority of Jesus’ name. Jesus explained that he had witnessed how Satan was cast from heaven after his rebellion against God. He then went on to say, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” Jesus knew that they would relate this analogy, referring to their authority over Satan and his hordes, with their experience of trekking the scorpion and snake-infested highways of the Judean desert in open sandals.

As you track the paths of life, you will often find yourself walking down demon-infested avenues. The Bible says that the devil is waiting to devour us at every turn. But take heart, Jesus has given you authority to trample on these scorpions and serpents. In his name, he has given you authority to overcome all the power of the enemy. And the enemy’s power is nothing more than lies; lies about your health, your finances, your future, and your relationships. So, walk boldly in the victory that Christ has given you by the power of his name. And when those snakes and scorpions try to attack your feet, trample on them with all authority! Remember, the One in you is a thousand times greater than the one in the world. As Smith Wigglesworth said, “The life that is in me is a thousand times bigger than I am outside.”

God-tracking is stomping on the snakes and scorpions on your path.
