Kerry Cole creates an air of mystery from the start, leaving the reader to figure things out for themselves. There are questions you can’t wait to be answered. It seems confusing at first that much of the book is a story within a story, but the author brings the two stories together dramatically and everything starts to make sense. The first character to be introduced is Alice who comes across as a dark figure, living a reclusive life as a traveller, with some rather dubious connections. She has set up camp, with her horse and caravan in the mysterious Beulah estate where she unexpectedly meets Kes. The narrative suddenly backtracks into the supposedly idyllic world of three surfers, Kes, Blake and Taran who share a beach house paradise. It is carefree world where anything goes and people are bound to get hurt. Kerry offers a perplexing insight into the way’s today’s young people look for love and romance yet find themselves short-changed. It seems what they are really looking for lies far beyond the Purple Veil.
Exit Darcus asks many questions and has many loose ends, but Kerry answers these and ties up the loose ends beautifully. Some of the environments she creates may sound too perfect for reality, and the characters could be fleshed out more deeply but this will be the challenge of further books. I have no doubt that there will be follow up books that focus on the concept of life beyond the Purple Veil. The reader will want to know how things work out with Taran and the girl he believes he will marry, and who will Darcus strike at next?
