Just Do It His Way

Come to Jesus now, if you are bone weary and burdened, and just do it his way.

Some weeks I just about make it to the weekend without falling apart under the load of things to do: people to meet, chores to deal with, deadlines to reach… and that’s just during the daylight hours! By the time Friday evening comes along I’m burned-out washed-up and utterly fatigued and the weekend is no better.

Jesus was once invited to dinner at a home of a lady called, Martha. She lived with her sister, Mary. Jesus and his 12 friends entered the home and sat down in what I would imagine was their living room. There were probably more than fifteen people gathered in that house that evening. A large group to cater for. So dear Martha set about cooking and getting things ready for her special guests.

Meanwhile Jesus starts chatting to the group about the kingdom of God. Mary is captivated by Jesus’ words and sits quietly at his feet. When Martha notices her sister is not pulling her weight by helping prepare the meal so she becomes angry. “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” she says. Jesus replies, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28-30

If you’re like me, or like Martha, then you probably plod along your life track in your own strength doing the daily grind your way instead of just sitting at Jesus’ feet. Could this be the reason Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you,” and later adds, “my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Being yoked with (or partnered with) Jesus implies doing the job together with him and by his methods. It does not mean slogging at every opportunity that comes our way by our own efforts. Being yoked with Jesus allows him to take the strain and bear the load. Notice, however, I do remain yoked to the cart doing the work, yet I’m yoked alongside Jesus, pulling his way.

So, if you are fatigued with life then make a choice today to hand over your weekly schedule to the Lord and become yoked with Jesus. Cut out the superfluous non-essential time wasters and focus only on what he brings your way. Come to Jesus now, if you are bone weary, and burdened and just do it his way.
